The main scale and the vernier scale readings are added together to form the main readings

Main scale = 7mm, vernier scale = 0.38mm  .The reading is 7.38mm

Main scale = 3mm, vernier scale = 0.09mmThe reading is 3.09mm

Micrometer screw gauge is used for certain measurement such as diameter of a wire, thickness of nylon and paper , diameter of small ball.
