Properties of images formed by a mirror.

Properties of images formed by a mirror.

2.2: Images Formed by Plane Mirrors - Physics LibreTexts

Lets consider object pp’ placed in front of a mirror. The rays strike the mirror and reflected  . the ray appear to the eyes as if they come from QQ’ . PB=BQ, while PQ is perpendicular tp AB

There is no actual or real rays that comes from QQ’ to the mirror at A , the image is therefore vitual, it cannot be seen on a screen placed at QQ’ like that of pin hole camera.

A Virtual image is the image which can not be formed on  screen

A Real image is the image which can be formed on the screen

The image in a plane mirror has the following properties.

  1. Virtual
  2. The same size as the object
  3. Upright
  4. The same distance from the mirror as the object
  5. Laterally inverted

Images formed by inclined mirrors

When two mirrors are inclined at right angle and candle O is placed in front of them . Three images are formed and seen by observer . when these mirrors are inclined at an angle different from 90 degree, the number of images formed will be increase or decrease. When the mirrors are parallel , an infinite images will be seen.
