Penumbra and Umbra

A point source of light produces a sharp shadow while a large source of light produces a partial shadow and a sharp shadow.

The partial shadow of an object placed in front of large source of light is the Penumbra

The sharp shadow inside the penumbra formed by a large source of light is called the Umbra.
