The Bicycle Pump.

A bicycle pump is a typical example of air pump. Other air pump known are the electric air pump. In an industry, electric air pump is known as compressor and suction pump. Compressor is used to compress air into a given space, while suction pump evacuates air from a given space.

Air Pumps generally function as;

  1. Compressors , to compress air into a given space.
  2. Suction , to evacuate air from a given space.

A bicycle pump is a mechanical or manual pump to compress air into a given space i.e bicycle tyre, as shown in the diagram above.

The pump has a flexible leather washer at the end of a piston . it is connected to the bicycle tyre which has a rubber valve.

When the piston is drawn out , air below it expands and pressure is reduced below atmospheric . Air from outside the pump then flows pass the leather washer into the barrel. During this time the tyre valve remains closed. When the piston returns the air compressed below it forces the leather  washer against the sides of the barrel so that no air enters and the air inside is forced in to the tyre through the open valve. Air from outside is compressed into the tyre with each stroke of the piston.
