The Hydraulic Press And Pascal’s Principles
The Pascal’s principle and hydraulic press are both practical application of pressure in liquid and gas
The Pascal’s Principle
The Pascal Principle states that the pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted at the same rate to every portion of the fluid and the walls of the enclosed container.
The operation of the hydraulic press and car brake is base on this principle.
The hydraulic Press
The hydraulic press is used to produce a large force from a small force.
From the figure 1 above
Pressure at A = Pressure at B
From this ,
- The smaller the a the higher the F
- The higher the diameter or length and breadth of A , the higher the F
- F and f are directly proportional.
Keeping a and A constant, F is directly proportional to f. Hence with a small effort f , large output force F can be achieved.
Applications.
- Hydraulic press is used in cotton industry to compress bales cotton.
- Hydraulic press is used to raise heavy car in hydraulic jack.
Example
The area of small and large cylinders of an hydraulic press are 20cm2 and 20000cm2 respectively.
If a mass of 20kg is placed on the small cylinder , what is the useful force produced at the large cylinder ? .
